Sri Lanka's central highlands are cooler, greener and slower than the coast. Tea bushes cover the hillsides, waterfalls tumble beside the roads and the famous railway winds between the towns. Allow at least four days between Kandy and Ella; six is better. The clearest weather is from January to April.
Day 1: Kandy
Explore Kandy, the last royal capital: the Temple of the Tooth (go for the evening ceremony), a walk around Kandy Lake, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and a Kandyan dance performance. In July or August, time your visit for the Esala Perahera.
Day 2: Into tea country
Take the train from Kandy to Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) or Hatton, or drive via the A5 road past Ramboda Falls and the tea factories that line the route. Stop at a factory to see how tea is made — our tea country guide suggests the best ones.
Stay in Nuwara Eliya — "Little England", with a colonial post office, the Gregory Lake and a racecourse — or in a restored tea bungalow around Hatton, near St Clair's and Devon Falls.
Day 3: Horton Plains or Adam's Peak
- Horton Plains: leave around 5:30 a.m. to walk the 9.5 km loop to World's End and Baker's Falls before the mist rolls in, usually by 10 a.m.
- Adam's Peak: if you're based near Hatton between December and May, climb overnight for sunrise. Read our Adam's Peak guide.
Day 4: The train to Ella
Catch the train from Nanu Oya or Hatton to Ella. This is the most spectacular part of the line, through Pattipola (the highest station) and Haputale. See our Kandy to Ella train guide for booking tips.
Day 5: Ella
- Sunrise from Little Adam's Peak.
- A train crossing the Nine Arches Bridge.
- A tea factory tour at Uva Halpewatte.
- Afternoon: Ravana Falls or a cooking class.
Energetic? Hike Ella Rock. Our Ella hiking guide covers all the routes.
Day 6: Haputale
Visit Haputale, a quieter town on a ridge. Walk from the Dambatenne tea factory to Lipton's Seat, where Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his estates, at sunrise for the clearest views. Then continue to Diyaluma Falls and swim in the natural pools at the top.
From here, it's 2–3 hours down to Udawalawe or Yala for a safari, or 3.5 hours to Arugam Bay.
Practical tips
- Pack warm layers. Nights in Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains can be chilly. See our packing list.
- Start early. Mornings are clearest; clouds and rain often arrive in the afternoon.
- Roads are slow. Distances look short but bends make journeys long — 50 km can take two hours.
- Book trains early. Reserved seats sell out weeks in advance in high season.
- Walk the Pekoe Trail. This long-distance walking route through tea country, opened in stages since 2024, links estates and villages from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and Ella. You can walk a single stage.
