One Week in Sri Lanka: Two 7-Day Itineraries That Actually Work

A week isn't long, but it's enough to see a lot of Sri Lanka if you choose one of two focused routes instead of trying to see everything.

One Week in Sri Lanka: Two 7-Day Itineraries That Actually Work

Seven days is short for Sri Lanka, and the biggest mistake is trying to squeeze in everything — you'll spend the week in a car. Instead, pick one of these two routes. Both start and end at the international airport near Colombo and keep driving to around 3–4 hours on the longest days.

Route A: Culture and the hill country

Best for: first-timers who want history, temples, tea country and the famous train. Works year-round (best December–April).

Day Plan Overnight
1 Arrive, drive to Sigiriya (4 h) Sigiriya
2 Sigiriya Rock at dawn, Dambulla caves, elephant safari Sigiriya
3 Pidurangala sunrise, drive to Kandy (2.5–3 h), Temple of the Tooth Kandy
4 Peradeniya gardens, train to Ella (7 h) or drive (5–6 h) Ella
5 Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arches Bridge, tea factory Ella
6 Drive to the coast via Udawalawe safari, or to Galle via the expressway Galle / south coast
7 Galle Fort, drive to the airport (2.5–3 h) —

Tips: Sigiriya is easiest from the airport on day 1 because you avoid Colombo traffic. If you can't get train seats from Kandy to Ella, take the train for the most scenic section only (Nanu Oya to Ella) and drive the rest.

Route B: Hill country and beaches

Best for: travellers who want nature, a safari and real beach time. Best December–April.

Day Plan Overnight
1 Arrive, drive to Kandy (3–3.5 h) Kandy
2 Temple of the Tooth, lake, morning train towards Ella Ella
3 Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arches Bridge Ella
4 Drive to Tissamaharama, afternoon Yala safari Tissa
5 Drive to Mirissa (2.5 h), beach afternoon Mirissa
6 Whale watching (Nov–Apr), Weligama surf lesson Mirissa
7 Galle Fort, airport (2.5–3 h) —

What to skip in one week

  • Trincomalee, Arugam Bay and Jaffna — wonderful, but too far for a week unless you dedicate the trip to them.
  • Anuradhapura — pick Polonnaruwa instead if you want one ancient city.
  • Nuwara Eliya — lovely but optional; you'll see tea country from the train and in Ella.

Getting around in a week

A private driver saves the most time on a short trip: they can pick you up at the airport, wait while you sightsee, and meet you at Ella station with your luggage after the train. On public transport, choose Route B and expect longer travel days. See getting around Sri Lanka.

Frequently asked questions

Is one week enough for Sri Lanka?

It's enough for one region-focused trip — for example culture and hills, or hills and beaches. You won't see everything, and that's fine.

Which is better for a week: the Cultural Triangle or the beach?

If it's your first visit, the Cultural Triangle and hill country (Route A) give the most variety. If you need relaxation, Route B ends with three beach days.

Can I add the Kandy–Ella train to a 7-day trip?

Yes, both routes include it. Book reserved seats as early as possible.
