The South Coast

The South Coast

Golden beaches, Galle Fort, whale watching, surf breaks and lazy lagoon villages.

Sri Lanka's south coast is the classic beach stretch: a string of bays from Bentota to Tangalle linked by the coastal road and the Southern Expressway. Galle Fort is the cultural anchor — a walled Dutch-era town on a headland — while Unawatuna, Weligama, Mirissa and Hiriketiya each have a different personality, from beginner surf to whale-watching harbours and quiet coves. Travel here between December and April for calm seas; outside that window the south-west monsoon brings rough water and red flags.

Highlights

  • Walking the ramparts of Galle Fort at sunset
  • Blue whales off Mirissa
  • Learning to surf in Weligama
  • Turtle nesting at Rekawa
