Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka: Month-by-Month Weather Guide

The short answer: December to April is the best time for the classic route — the south and west coasts, the hill country and the Cultural Triangle — and May to September is the best time for the east coast. Because two monsoons hit opposite sides of the island at different times of year, there is good weather somewhere in Sri Lanka every month.

How Sri Lanka's monsoons work

  • South-west monsoon (Yala), roughly May to September — brings rain to the west coast, the south coast and the western hill country. The east and north stay mostly dry.
  • North-east monsoon (Maha), roughly November to February — brings rain to the east coast and the north. The west and south are dry and sunny.
  • Inter-monsoon periods (April and October–November) — afternoon thunderstorms can hit anywhere, often short and heavy. October is usually the wettest month island-wide.

Rain in the tropics rarely lasts all day. Even in "monsoon" months you'll often get sunny mornings and an afternoon downpour. The biggest practical effect is on the sea: during its monsoon, a coast has rough water, strong currents and red flags, and many beach businesses close.

Best time by region

Region Best months Avoid / wetter
South coast (Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle) December–April May–September
West coast (Colombo, Negombo, Bentota) December–April May–June, October
Hill country (Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella) January–April October–December
Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa) February–September November–January
East coast (Trincomalee, Arugam Bay) May–September November–February
North (Jaffna) January–September October–December

Sri Lanka month by month

January and February — Peak season. Dry and sunny on the west and south coasts and in the hills, with clear mornings for Horton Plains and Adam's Peak. Whale watching from Mirissa is excellent. Book accommodation early. The east coast is still wet in January.

March — One of the best all-round months: the south, west and hills are dry, the Cultural Triangle is warming up, and the east coast is starting to dry out. Fewer crowds than January.

April — Hot and humid. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year (around 13–14 April) brings family festivities; hill stations like Nuwara Eliya fill with domestic holidaymakers and many businesses close for a few days. Afternoon thunderstorms begin.

May — The south-west monsoon arrives on the west and south coasts. The east coast season begins — head to Trincomalee and Pasikudah. Vesak, the full-moon festival celebrating the Buddha, fills towns with lanterns.

June to August — The east coast and the Cultural Triangle are at their best. Arugam Bay's surf season peaks. The Elephant Gathering at Minneriya builds from July. Kandy's Esala Perahera takes place in July or August. The south coast sees showers and rough seas, but it's quieter and cheaper. Poson (June) is a major festival around Mihintale.

September — Still good in the east and north. The Gathering peaks at Minneriya. Yala Block 1 usually closes for around six weeks between September and October.

October — Typically the wettest month across the island as the monsoons change over. Prices are low; expect heavy afternoon rain. A good month for budget travellers who don't mind flexibility.

November — Rain eases on the west and south coasts towards the end of the month and whale-watching season begins in Mirissa. The east and north are now wet.

December — High season returns to the south and west. Adam's Peak pilgrimage season opens at the December full moon. Christmas and New Year are the busiest, most expensive weeks of the year.
