Adam's Peak — Sri Pada, "the sacred footprint" — is a 2,243-metre cone-shaped mountain in the southern hill country and one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Asia. A rock formation near the summit resembles a giant footprint: Buddhists believe it is the Buddha's, Hindus Shiva's, and many Muslims and Christians Adam's. For centuries pilgrims have climbed through the night to reach the top by dawn, and doing it alongside them is one of the most memorable experiences in Sri Lanka.

The pilgrimage season

The official season runs from the Unduvap full moon in December to the Vesak full moon in May. During this time the path is lit all night, tea shops along the way are open and the summit temple is active. Weekends and poya (full-moon) days are extremely crowded — you may queue for hours near the top. Climb on a weekday if you can.

Outside the season the lights are off, most stalls are closed and the weather is often wet and windy. Climbing is still possible with a local guide and a headlamp, but it is a very different, more serious hike.

The route from Dalhousie

The most popular route starts at Dalhousie (Nallathanniya):

  • Around 5,500 steps, with a total ascent of about 1,000 metres.
  • Most people take 3–4 hours to reach the top; allow longer in crowds.
  • Start between 1:30 and 2:30 am to arrive before sunrise (around 6–6:30 am).
  • The final section is very steep; take regular short breaks.

At sunrise, look west: the peak casts a perfect triangular shadow across the clouds and valleys below.

What to bring

  • Warm clothes — the summit is cold and windy before dawn. Pack a fleece, a windproof jacket and a hat.
  • A headlamp (even in season), water and snacks.
  • Comfortable shoes with grip and a small towel. Cover shoulders and knees at the summit shrine.
  • Small notes for tea and snacks along the way.

Getting there and where to stay

Dalhousie is about 1 hour by road from Hatton station (on the Kandy–Ella railway) and around 4.5–5 hours from Colombo. Stay in a Dalhousie guesthouse the night before, go to bed early and set an alarm for around 1 am. Many travellers continue afterwards to the Hatton tea trails or Nuwara Eliya.

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada): frequently asked questions

How hard is the Adam's Peak climb?

It is a long, steep stair climb rather than a technical hike. Reasonably fit people manage fine with breaks; your legs will ache the next day.

Can you climb Adam's Peak outside the season?

Yes, but the path is unlit, facilities are closed and weather is unreliable. Go with a local guide and check conditions first.

What is the best day to climb?

A weekday in January–April that isn't a poya day, for clear skies and smaller crowds.
