Horton Plains National Park is a high, windswept plateau at over 2,000 metres, covered in grassland and cloud forest and fringed by sheer escarpments. Its signature walk is a loop of roughly 9–10 km to World's End, where the land drops about 870 metres to the tea estates and plains below, and Baker's Falls, a broad waterfall named after the explorer Samuel Baker. The park is part of the UNESCO-listed Central Highlands of Sri Lanka.

The loop walk

The trail starts from the Farr Inn visitor centre and is easy to follow:

  1. Little World's End — a first, smaller drop-off with valley views.
  2. World's End — the main cliff edge. On a clear morning you can see far across the southern lowlands.
  3. Baker's Falls — a short detour down steps to the waterfall.
  4. Back across open grassland to the start.

Allow 3–4 hours at a steady pace. The terrain is mostly gentle with some rocky, uneven sections.

Why you must start early

Mist usually rolls up from the valley by 9–10 am, after which World's End can be a white wall. The park opens around 6 am: aim to be at the gate at opening time and walk the loop clockwise (Little World's End first) so you reach the main viewpoint early.

Tips

  • It is cold at dawn — bring a warm layer, a windproof jacket and water.
  • Plastic and polythene are restricted; rangers may check bags. Carry your rubbish out.
  • Stay on the trail. Sambar deer graze near the visitor centre; please don't feed them.
  • Ticket prices for foreigners are per person plus vehicle and service charges; the total surprises some people, so ask your driver.

Getting there

  • From Nuwara Eliya: about 1–1.5 hours by road — leave around 5 am.
  • From Ella or Haputale: about 2–2.5 hours, or take an early train to Ohiya station and arrange transport from there.
  • Most people visit with a driver or a hired tuk-tuk/jeep from Nuwara Eliya.

When to go

January to April gives the clearest mornings. The park is open year-round, but from May to September the mist arrives earlier and rain is more frequent.
