Ella is a small town in a gap between mountains at about 1,000 metres, and for many travellers it ends up being their favourite place in Sri Lanka. The appeal is simple: cool mornings, tea-covered hills, easy hikes straight from your guesthouse door and a relaxed café scene once the day's walking is done. It is also the end point of the famous train ride from Kandy.

Things to do in Ella

  • Little Adam's Peak — the easiest and most rewarding walk: about 45 minutes up through tea bushes to a ridge with views of Ella Gap. Go for sunrise.
  • Nine Arches Bridge — the colonial-era stone viaduct in the jungle, a 30-minute walk from town. Check train times and wait for one to cross.
  • Ella Rock — a longer, steeper half-day hike to a summit overlooking the southern plains. Start early and consider a guide.
  • Ravana Falls — a roadside waterfall a few kilometres downhill, at its best after rain.
  • Tea factory visits — walk through a working factory and taste fresh Uva tea; the Halpewatte factory is the best known.
  • Demodara Loop — a spiral where the railway passes under itself, a short drive towards Badulla.
  • Cooking classes — several family-run guesthouses teach rice and curry, often starting with a market visit.

How long to stay

Two to three nights. That gives you one sunrise hike, one longer hike, and time for the bridge, a tea factory and lazy afternoons. Ella is also the natural jumping-off point for the south coast (about 4.5 hours to Mirissa via the Ella–Wellawaya pass) or a safari in Yala or Udawalawe (2.5–3 hours).

Getting there

  • By train from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya (Nanu Oya): the classic route. Kandy–Ella takes about 7 hours; Nanu Oya–Ella about 3–3.5 hours. Read our Kandy to Ella train guide for tickets and seat tips.
  • By road: around 5–6 hours from Kandy and 6–7 hours from Colombo. A private driver can stop at waterfalls and viewpoints on the way.

When to visit

The driest, clearest months are January to April. June to September is usually fine too. October to December brings more rain and mist — still beautiful, but hikes are muddier and views less reliable. Mornings are always clearer than afternoons, so hike early.

Where to stay

Central Ella is convenient for restaurants but noisy at night; most of the best guesthouses are on the slopes just outside town, many with balcony views of Ella Gap. Book ahead between December and April.

Tips

  • Never walk on the railway tracks or bridge when a train is due. People have been seriously injured taking photos.
  • Carry a light rain jacket — weather changes fast in the hills.
  • Use leech socks on forest trails after rain.

Ella Town: frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Ella?

Two to three nights is ideal for the main hikes and sights without rushing.

Is Ella better than Nuwara Eliya?

They're different. Ella is lower, warmer and built around hiking and a backpacker café scene; Nuwara Eliya is higher, colder and more colonial. Most itineraries include Ella; Nuwara Eliya is optional unless you plan to visit Horton Plains.

Can you visit Ella in the rainy season?

Yes. Expect afternoon showers and mist, so plan hikes for early morning and keep a flexible day in your schedule.
