The Nine Arches Bridge — also known as the Bridge in the Sky — is a stone-and-brick railway viaduct curving across a jungle valley between Ella and Demodara. Completed in 1921 on the Badulla line, it was built without steel, and its nine tall arches set among tea and forest have made it one of the most photographed places in Sri Lanka.

How to get there

  • On foot from Ella town (about 30–40 minutes): the most popular route follows the railway line from Ella station towards Demodara. It is scenic but you are walking on an active track — keep off it whenever a train is due.
  • Via the Little Adam's Peak road: walk or take a tuk-tuk towards the Ella Flower Garden area, then follow the footpath down through the tea to the bridge. This is the safer route.
  • By tuk-tuk: drivers can drop you at a parking area above the bridge, followed by a short, steep walk down.

When do trains cross?

Several passenger trains a day cross the bridge in each direction, and many visitors time their visit to see one. Timetables change and delays are common, so ask at Ella station or your guesthouse for the day's expected times and arrive early. Morning trains are the most popular with photographers.

Best viewpoints

  • The viewpoint café on the hillside facing the bridge gives the classic side-on view, especially when a train crosses.
  • Tea slopes on the Ella side for a higher angle looking down on the arches.
  • From the bridge deck itself — only when no train is due.

Early morning brings soft light and few people. By late morning the bridge is busy, particularly in high season (December to April).

Safety

People have been badly hurt standing on the tracks or leaning out from the bridge as trains approach. Trains here are slow but cannot stop quickly. Step well clear of the track and never sit on the parapet.

Combine it with

Little Adam's Peak at sunrise, the bridge mid-morning, then lunch in Ella town. The Demodara Loop, where the railway passes under itself, is a short drive further on.
