How Much Does a Trip to Sri Lanka Cost? A Realistic Budget Guide

Sri Lanka offers excellent value, but costs vary widely depending on how you travel. The biggest variables are accommodation, transport (private driver vs public transport) and entrance fees, which for foreigners are charged in US dollars at major sites. Prices below are typical ranges in US dollars and change with exchange rates and season — use them as a guide, not a quote.

Sample daily budgets (per person, sharing a room)

Style Per day What it looks like
Budget USD 30–50 Guesthouses, local food, trains and buses
Mid-range USD 70–150 Boutique guesthouses/hotels, mix of local and tourist restaurants, a private driver shared by two
Luxury USD 250+ Boutique hotels and villas, fine dining, private driver-guide

Add the cost of big-ticket sights and safaris separately (see below).

Accommodation

  • Guesthouses and homestays: about USD 15–40 a night, often including breakfast. Some of the best experiences on the island.
  • Mid-range hotels and boutique guesthouses: about USD 50–120.
  • Luxury hotels, tea bungalows and villas: USD 150 to many hundreds.

Prices rise sharply over Christmas and New Year, during Kandy's Perahera and in April in Nuwara Eliya.

Food

  • Rice and curry at a local eatery: a couple of dollars.
  • Kottu or hoppers: similar.
  • Meal at a tourist café: around USD 6–15.
  • Dinner at a good restaurant: USD 15–40+ per person.
  • Beer: a large local beer costs a few dollars in a shop and more in bars.

See our food guide for what to order.

Transport

  • Trains and buses: very cheap — usually a few dollars or less, even for long journeys.
  • Tuk-tuks: a short town ride typically costs a dollar or two; use ride-hailing apps in cities for fair prices.
  • Private driver: commonly around USD 50–80 a day for a car including fuel and the driver's expenses, more for vans or luxury vehicles. Split between two to four people, it's often good value. See hiring a driver.

Entrance fees and activities

Major cultural sites charge foreigners in USD. Indicative recent prices:

  • Sigiriya: around USD 35.
  • Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura: around USD 25–30 each.
  • Temple of the Tooth and Dambulla: lower, charged in rupees.
  • Safaris: budget roughly USD 50–100 per person for a half-day in Yala including jeep hire and park fees (less when sharing a jeep, more for full days).
  • Whale watching: roughly USD 40–80 per person.

Fees change regularly; confirm at the ticket office.

Money tips

  • The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). ATMs are widely available in towns; carry cash for small guesthouses, tuk-tuks and markets.
  • Cards are accepted at most hotels and larger restaurants, sometimes with a surcharge.
  • Exchange money at banks or licensed exchanges; keep your receipts.
  • Tipping: around 10% in restaurants if no service charge is included; tip drivers and guides for good service (drivers often receive a daily tip at the end of a tour).
  • Haggle politely at markets and with tuk-tuk drivers who don't use meters.

Ways to save

  • Travel in the shoulder season (May–June, September–November) for lower prices.
  • Mix trains for the scenic routes with a driver for the harder sections.
  • Eat where locals eat — the food is often better too.
  • Choose one or two paid cultural sites rather than all of them; Pidurangala gives a great Sigiriya view for far less.
