Sri Lanka Visa & ETA: How to Apply and Avoid Scam Websites
Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arriving in Sri Lanka. Here's how the process works, where to apply officially and what to check before you fly.

Most foreign visitors need permission to enter Sri Lanka before they arrive, usually in the form of an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for tourism. The rules — including which nationalities pay a fee and which are exempt — have changed several times in recent years, so treat this guide as an overview and always confirm the current requirements on the official government website before you travel.
Do I need a visa for Sri Lanka?
For short tourist visits, most nationalities apply for a tourist ETA online. A small number of countries are exempt, and Sri Lanka has at times run schemes that waive the fee for selected nationalities. Because these lists change, check:
- The official ETA website of the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka (eta.gov.lk), and
- Your own government's travel advice page for Sri Lanka.
How the tourist ETA works
- Apply online before you travel. You'll enter your passport details, travel dates and an address in Sri Lanka (your first hotel is fine).
- Pay the fee (if applicable to your nationality) by card.
- Receive approval by email, typically quickly. Print it or keep a copy on your phone.
- Show it on arrival with your passport. Immigration may also ask for a return or onward ticket and proof of funds.
A tourist ETA has traditionally allowed a stay of up to 30 days, with the possibility of extending your visa in Colombo. Check the current validity and extension rules on the official site.
Beware of unofficial websites
Many websites look official but are private agencies that charge extra fees on top of the government fee. Some appear above the official site in search results. Before you pay:
- Make sure the domain is the official government site.
- Compare the fee with the official fee schedule.
- Never pay for "fast-track" processing you don't need.
Other entry requirements to check
- Passport validity: your passport should usually be valid for at least six months from arrival.
- Return or onward ticket.
- Health requirements: check whether any vaccinations are required (for example, yellow fever certificates if arriving from affected countries).
- Customs: declare large amounts of currency and avoid bringing restricted items such as drones without permission.
- Arrival card or digital arrival forms, if in use at the time.
Extending your stay
If you want to stay longer, you can usually apply to extend your visa through the Department of Immigration and Emigration before your initial permission expires. Allow time for the process.
