Hiring a car with a driver is the most popular way to tour Sri Lanka, especially on a first trip. It's surprisingly affordable, takes the stress out of slow and chaotic roads, and a good driver becomes part guide, part fixer and part friend.
How it works
You hire a driver and vehicle for your whole trip (a "chauffeur-guide" tour) or for individual transfers. The driver picks you up at the airport, follows your itinerary, waits while you sightsee and recommends places to eat and visit. On train days, your driver usually takes your luggage and meets you at the other end.
Typical costs
A car with driver commonly costs around USD 50–80 per day, depending on the vehicle, season and distance. This usually includes:
- the vehicle and fuel,
- the driver's salary, food and accommodation,
- highway tolls and parking (check).
Vans for families or groups cost more. Prices are often quoted per day or as a package for the whole route. Always confirm exactly what is included in writing.
Driver accommodation
Many hotels and guesthouses provide free or cheap driver rooms. Some boutique hotels don't — in which case the driver finds accommodation nearby. Make sure your quote covers this.
Choosing a vehicle
- Car (e.g. Toyota Prius, Axio): 1–3 passengers with luggage.
- SUV: more comfort and space for 2–3, useful on rougher roads.
- Van (e.g. Toyota KDH): 4–8 passengers.
- Ask for air conditioning, seat belts that work in the rear, and the vehicle's age.
Finding a good driver
- Read recent reviews and ask for references.
- Check that the driver holds a valid licence and, ideally, a tourist driver licence from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).
- Have a short call or chat beforehand to check their English and communication.
- Agree the itinerary, price, inclusions and daily driving hours in advance.

Commission stops
Some drivers earn commission by taking guests to particular gem shops, spice gardens or restaurants. It's part of the industry — but you're not obliged to stop or buy. Tell your driver politely at the start which kinds of stops you'd like to skip.
Tipping
Tipping is customary at the end of the tour. A common guideline is around USD 10–15 per day for good service, more if they went above and beyond.
Is a driver the right choice?
Yes, if: you're on a two- to three-week trip, travelling as a family or group, or want to cover a lot of ground comfortably. Maybe not, if: you're on a tight budget or travelling slowly — trains and buses are part of the adventure. Many people mix both: train for the Kandy–Ella route, driver for the rest.
