Minneriya National Park surrounds an ancient reservoir built in the 3rd century AD by King Mahasena. In the dry season, as other water sources disappear, the receding tank exposes fresh grassland — and wild elephants arrive from all directions to feed and drink. This seasonal congregation, known as "The Gathering", can bring together hundreds of elephants at once and is one of the great wildlife spectacles in Asia.
When to go
- July to October is the Gathering season, usually peaking in August and September.
- At other times of year elephants move between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park depending on water and grazing. Jeep drivers know where the herds are and will often suggest the right park on the day — trust their judgement.
Safari tips
- Afternoon safaris (about 2:30–6 pm) are the norm here, when elephants come out onto the grassland and the light is beautiful.
- Safaris last about 3 hours. Jeeps can be booked from Habarana, Sigiriya or at the park gate.
- In peak season, many jeeps gather around the herds. A good driver keeps a respectful distance and switches off the engine.
- Bring binoculars, a hat and water. The roads are bumpy.
Fitting it into your trip
Minneriya is ideal as an afternoon add-on to a morning at Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa. Base yourself in Sigiriya, Dambulla or Habarana; the park entrance is about 30–45 minutes away.
