Sri Lanka 10-Day Itinerary: Culture, Tea Country and Beaches
Ten days is enough to see the best of Sri Lanka — ancient rock fortresses, the famous hill-country train, a safari and a few days on the beach — without rushing. Here's the day-by-day route.

Ten days is the sweet spot for a first trip to Sri Lanka. It's enough to see the Cultural Triangle, ride the hill-country train, spot elephants on safari and finish with a few days on the beach. This route works best from December to April, when the south coast and hills are dry. For a shorter trip, see our 7-day itinerary; for more time, our 2-week and 3-week routes.
Route at a glance
| Days | Base | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Negombo | Arrival, beach and fish market |
| 2–3 | Sigiriya | Sigiriya, Pidurangala, Dambulla, safari |
| 4 | Kandy | Temple of the Tooth, botanical gardens |
| 5–6 | Ella | Kandy–Ella train, Nine Arches Bridge, Little Adam's Peak |
| 7 | Tissamaharama / Udawalawe | Safari |
| 8–10 | South coast | Mirissa or Tangalle, Galle Fort, departure |
Day 1: Arrive in Negombo
Land at the airport and transfer to Negombo (about 30 minutes). Rest, walk on the beach and have a seafood dinner. See our airport arrival guide.
Day 2: Drive to Sigiriya and climb Pidurangala
Drive to Sigiriya (about 4 hours), stopping at the Dambulla Cave Temple. In the late afternoon, climb Pidurangala Rock for sunset views of Sigiriya.
Day 3: Sigiriya and an elephant safari
Climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress at opening time to beat the heat and crowds. In the afternoon, take a jeep safari at Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu Eco Park, depending on where the elephants are. Not sure which rock to climb? See Sigiriya vs Pidurangala.
Alternative: swap the safari for a bicycle tour of Polonnaruwa.
Day 4: Kandy
Drive to Kandy (about 2.5–3 hours), stopping at a spice garden in Matale if you like. Visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, then the Temple of the Tooth for the evening ceremony.
Day 5: The train to Ella
Take the scenic train from Kandy to Ella — 6–7 hours of tea estates, waterfalls and mountain views. Book seats well ahead; see our Kandy to Ella train guide. Your driver takes your luggage by road.
Short on patience? Ride the most scenic section from Nanu Oya or Hatton to Ella and drive the rest.
Day 6: Ella
Walk to Little Adam's Peak for sunrise, visit the Nine Arches Bridge to see a train cross, and relax in Ella's cafés. Fit walkers can tackle Ella Rock instead. More ideas in our Ella hiking guide.
Day 7: Safari
Drive down to the lowlands (2–3 hours), passing Ravana Falls. Take an afternoon safari at Yala for leopards or Udawalawe for elephants. Stay near the park. Our safari guide helps you choose.
Days 8–9: The south coast
Drive to the coast (2–3 hours). Choose Mirissa for a lively beach and whale watching (December–April), or Tangalle and Hiriketiya for quieter beaches. Spend two days swimming, surfing and eating seafood.
Day 10: Galle Fort and departure
Drive west to Galle Fort and spend the morning walking the ramparts and lanes. Continue to the airport via the expressway (about 2–2.5 hours). If you have a late-night flight, this works well; otherwise spend your last night in Negombo.
Tips for this itinerary
- Hire a driver for the whole trip — it's the most efficient way to follow this route. See our driver guide.
- Book train tickets as soon as reservations open.
- May–September? Swap the south coast for the east: after Sigiriya, spend days 8–10 in Trincomalee or Pasikudah. See our east coast itinerary.
Frequently asked questions
Is 10 days enough for Sri Lanka?
Yes — enough for the Cultural Triangle, hill country, a safari and the beach at a comfortable pace.
What is the best order to travel Sri Lanka in 10 days?
Most travellers go Negombo → Sigiriya → Kandy → Ella → safari → south coast → airport, which avoids backtracking.
Can I do this itinerary by public transport?
Mostly, using trains and buses, but it is slower. Consider cutting one stop if you're not using a driver.
