Ella Hiking Guide: Ella Rock, Little Adam's Peak and More

Ella is a small hill-country town surrounded by tea estates, waterfalls and dramatic views through the Ella Gap down to the southern plains. Most of its highlights are reached on foot. Spend at least two days here to walk the best routes.

Little Adam's Peak

  • Difficulty: easy
  • Time: 1.5–2 hours return from town
  • Best time: sunrise

The most popular walk in Ella. Follow the Passara road out of town and take the signed lane through the tea estate to the base, then climb steps to the ridge. From the top, you look across to Ella Rock and down the Ella Gap. Keep walking along the ridge beyond the first viewpoint — it gets quieter and the views open up. More about Little Adam's Peak.

Nine Arches Bridge

  • Difficulty: easy
  • Time: 1–1.5 hours return
  • Best time: when a train is due

The colonial-era stone railway bridge sits in a jungle-covered valley. Walk from town along the railway line or take the path from the Kumbalwela side. Check the train timetable at Ella station so you can watch one cross. Nine Arches Bridge.

Safety: walking on railway lines is common but take care — trains are quiet on the bends, and there's little room on the bridge itself.

Ella Rock

  • Difficulty: moderate to strenuous
  • Time: 3–4 hours return
  • Best time: early morning, ideally starting at 6–6:30 a.m.

The big Ella hike. The classic route follows the railway line south from Ella station towards Kital Ella, then crosses a river and climbs steeply through eucalyptus forest and tea to the summit. Views stretch across the hills and down to the plains on clear mornings.

Tips:

  • Download an offline map — the paths branch confusingly, and "helpful" locals may offer to guide you for a fee.
  • Bring plenty of water. There's a small shop near the top.
  • Don't start too late; clouds often roll in by late morning.

Ravana Falls

  • Difficulty: easy (by tuk-tuk)
  • Time: 1–2 hours including travel

A roadside waterfall about 6 km below Ella on the road to Wellawaya, at its best after rain. Swimming in the pool is possible when the water is low, but rocks are slippery. Nearby is the Ravana Cave, linked with the Ramayana legend. Ravana Falls.

Demodara and the loop

Take the train or a tuk-tuk to Demodara, where the railway spirals beneath itself in a loop. Walk back via the Nine Arches Bridge for a half-day outing.

Lipton's Seat (day trip)

An hour's drive west, near Haputale, is Lipton's Seat — the viewpoint where Sir Thomas Lipton surveyed his tea empire. Go at dawn for the clearest views and walk down through the Dambatenne estate, past tea pluckers at work.

A two-day Ella walking plan

  • Day 1: sunrise at Little Adam's Peak, breakfast in town, Nine Arches Bridge mid-morning, tea factory tour in the afternoon.
  • Day 2: Ella Rock at dawn, lunch and rest, Ravana Falls late afternoon.
