The Best Hikes in Sri Lanka: From Easy Walks to Multi-Day Treks

Sri Lanka's compact hill country, ancient rocks and rainforests make it perfect for hiking. Most trails are short enough for a morning, so you can combine walking with sightseeing. The best season for the hills is January to April.

Easy walks

Little Adam's Peak, Ella

A gentle 45-minute climb through tea plantations to a ridge with views of Ella Gap. Perfect at sunrise. More on Little Adam's Peak.

Nine Arches Bridge, Ella

A short walk along the railway or through the forest to Sri Lanka's most photographed bridge. Check train times and you'll see one cross. Nine Arches Bridge.

Lipton's Seat, Haputale

Walk (or take a tuk-tuk up and walk down) through Dambatenne tea estate to Sir Thomas Lipton's favourite viewpoint. Go before 9 a.m. for clear views.

Moderate hikes

Horton Plains and World's End

A 9.5 km loop across a high, windswept plateau to World's End — a sheer 800 m cliff — and Baker's Falls. Start at dawn; mist usually covers the view by 10 a.m. Horton Plains.

Ella Rock

A 3–4 hour round trip from Ella along the railway and up through forest to a summit with huge views. The path is confusing in places; a local guide or offline map helps. See our Ella hiking guide.

Pidurangala Rock

A short but steep climb — with a final boulder scramble — for the best view of Sigiriya, especially at sunrise or sunset. See Sigiriya vs Pidurangala.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Guided walks through Sri Lanka's last major lowland rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of endemic birds, frogs and lizards. Expect leeches in wet weather. Sinharaja.

Challenging hikes

Adam's Peak (Sri Pada)

The great Sri Lankan pilgrimage: thousands of steps climbed overnight to watch sunrise from 2,243 m. Read our Adam's Peak climb guide.

Knuckles Mountain Range

A wild, cloud-forested range north-east of Kandy with trails for every level: the Mini World's End viewpoint, the Pitawala Pathana grassland and Dothalugala forest trail, through to multi-day treks via remote villages such as Meemure. Hire a local guide — trails are poorly marked and some require permits from the Forest Department. Knuckles Range.

Kirigalpoththa

Sri Lanka's second-highest climbable peak, reached from Horton Plains. Access rules change, so check with the park office before you go.

Long-distance: the Pekoe Trail

The Pekoe Trail is a waymarked long-distance walking route of around 300 km through the tea country, divided into 22 stages and opened in 2024. It follows old estate roads and footpaths between Kandy, Hatton, Nuwara Eliya, Haputale and Ella. You can walk a single stage in a day or link several with guesthouses along the way. See our tea country guide.

Safety and tips

  • Start early. Views are clearest before 10 a.m., and afternoon rain is common.
  • Hire local guides for the Knuckles, Sinharaja, Ella Rock (if unsure) and any off-season climb.
  • Wear proper shoes — trails get muddy and slippery.
  • Pack layers. It gets cold on high ground. See our packing list.
  • Leech socks help in rainforests.
  • Don't hike in heavy rain — paths flood and landslides happen.
  • Carry your rubbish out. Some parks, such as Horton Plains, ban plastic.
