Sri Lanka 3-Week Itinerary: The Complete Island Route

With three weeks you can travel Sri Lanka slowly, add places most visitors skip and still finish with a week by the sea. This route is designed for December to April. A summer (May–September) variation follows below.

14 Udawalawe or Yala Safari
15–20 South coast Beaches, surf, whales, Galle Fort

Days 1–3: Negombo and Anuradhapura

Rest in Negombo, then drive to Anuradhapura (about 4 hours). Spend a full day cycling between the great stupas and the sacred Bodhi tree, and climb Mihintale at sunset, where Buddhism arrived in Sri Lanka. Read Anuradhapura vs Polonnaruwa to plan your time.

Days 4–6: The Cultural Triangle

Base yourself in Sigiriya for three nights:

On the way to Kandy, see the Aukana Buddha or the Nalanda Gedige. Our Cultural Triangle itinerary has more detail.

Days 7–8: Kandy and the Knuckles

Visit the Temple of the Tooth, the botanical gardens and the lake. Spend a day hiking in the Knuckles Mountain Range with a local guide.

Days 9–10: Tea country

Drive through tea estates to Hatton or Nuwara Eliya, stopping at waterfalls and a tea factory. From December to May, climb Adam's Peak overnight for sunrise — see our Adam's Peak guide. Otherwise, walk Horton Plains to World's End. Our tea country guide has estate and factory tips.

Days 11–13: Ella and Haputale

Take the train to Ella or Haputale. Hike Ella Rock and Little Adam's Peak, visit the Nine Arches Bridge and Lipton's Seat, and see Diyaluma Falls, where you can swim in the upper pools.

Day 14: Safari

Drive to Udawalawe for elephants or Yala for leopards.

Days 15–20: The south coast

Spend a week moving slowly west along the coast. Try two bases:

Finish with a night in Galle Fort. Our south coast itinerary compares the towns.

Day 21: Departure

Galle to the airport takes about 2–2.5 hours via the expressways.

Summer variation (May–September)

Reverse the hill-country section and replace the south coast with the east: from the Cultural Triangle, spend 4–5 days in Trincomalee and Nilaveli, add 3 days in Jaffna, then finish in Arugam Bay after Ella. See our east coast and Jaffna itineraries.

Frequently asked questions

Is three weeks too long for Sri Lanka?

No. Three weeks lets you see more and travel at a relaxed pace, with time for a long beach stay.

Can I visit both coasts in three weeks?

Yes, but each coast is best at a different time of year. Spring (around April) and early autumn can work for both.

Should I hire a driver for three weeks?

Many travellers do for the inland section, then spend the beach week without one and use tuk-tuks locally.
