Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle: A 3–4 Day Itinerary
The Cultural Triangle holds Sri Lanka's greatest ancient sites — rock fortresses, cave temples and ruined royal cities — plus elephant safaris. Here's how to see the best in three or four days.

The Cultural Triangle is the area between Kandy, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka's dry north-central plains. It contains five UNESCO World Heritage Sites and is the historic heart of Sinhalese civilisation. Base yourself in one place and you can see the highlights in three or four days.
Where to stay
Sigiriya is the most convenient base, with accommodation for every budget and short drives to Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and the elephant parks. Habarana and Dambulla are good alternatives. If you want to visit Anuradhapura properly, add a night there.
Day 1: Dambulla and Pidurangala
- Morning: arrive and settle in. If you're coming from Colombo or Negombo, stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple on the way — five caves filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings, some more than 2,000 years old. Dress modestly and take your shoes off at the entrance.
- Late afternoon: climb Pidurangala Rock for sunset. The last section is a scramble over boulders; wear proper shoes.
Day 2: Sigiriya and a safari
- Early morning: climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress as soon as it opens. Walk through the water gardens, see the frescoes and the Lion's Paw, and reach the summit palace ruins before the heat. Allow 3 hours.
- Afternoon: an elephant safari. Minneriya is famous for the Gathering (roughly July–October), when hundreds of elephants come to graze around the reservoir. Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park are alternatives — local jeep drivers know where the herds are each week. Read our elephant guide.
Day 3: Polonnaruwa
Drive about an hour to Polonnaruwa, the island's medieval capital. Rent a bicycle at the entrance and ride between the Royal Palace, the Quadrangle with its circular Vatadage and the four great Buddha figures of the Gal Vihara, carved from a single granite wall. Start early; allow 4–5 hours.
Day 4 (optional): Anuradhapura and Mihintale
Drive about 1.5–2 hours to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka's first great capital, with enormous stupas and the Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. Finish with sunset at Mihintale. See Anuradhapura vs Polonnaruwa if you only have time for one.
More to see
- Ritigala Forest Monastery — atmospheric ruins in the jungle.
- Aukana Buddha — a 12-metre standing Buddha carved from rock.
- Yapahuwa — a lesser-known rock fortress with a dramatic staircase.
- Nalanda Gedige — a small, unusual temple mixing Hindu and Buddhist architecture.
- Village tours near Sigiriya and Habarana, with a bullock cart, a lake canoe and a home-cooked lunch.
Tickets and practical tips
- Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and Dambulla each charge foreigners a separate entrance fee, often quoted in US dollars. Check current prices before you go and carry cash as well as cards.
- Dress for temples: shoulders and knees covered, shoes and hats off. Sacred areas at Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are barefoot zones — go early before the stones get hot.
- Hire licensed guides at the official ticket offices.
- Bring water and a hat. This is the hottest, driest region of the country.
- Best time: February to September is driest. The region is visitable year-round, but November to January can be wet.
