Sri Lanka Honeymoon Guide: Romantic Itinerary and Ideas

Sri Lanka packs an adventure honeymoon and a beach honeymoon into one trip. You can climb an ancient rock fortress at dawn, sip tea on a colonial veranda, watch leopards at dusk and finish on a quiet beach — all within two weeks and without long flights in between.

When to go

December to April is ideal for the classic route through the south coast and hill country. For a May–September wedding, honeymoon on the east coast instead — see our east coast itinerary.

A romantic 14-day route

  1. Days 1–3: Cultural Triangle. Stay at a jungle or lakeside lodge near Sigiriya or Kandalama. Climb Sigiriya at dawn, watch sunset from Pidurangala and take a private elephant safari.
  2. Days 4–5: Kandy. Stay in a hilltop hotel with views over the forest. See the evening ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth.
  3. Days 6–7: Tea country. Book a restored tea planter's bungalow near Hatton or Nuwara Eliya — butlers, log fires, afternoon tea on the lawn and walks through the estates.
  4. Day 8: Train to Ella. Ride the famous train together — see our train guide — and spend the night in Ella with a valley view.
  5. Days 9–10: Safari. A luxury tented camp near Yala — leopards by day, dinner under the stars by night.
  6. Days 11–14: The beach. Finish in a private villa or boutique hotel at Tangalle or Hiriketiya, with a final night in Galle Fort.

Romantic experiences

  • A sunrise hot-air balloon flight over the Cultural Triangle (seasonal, roughly November–April; book ahead).
  • Private dinner on the beach — many south-coast hotels arrange candlelit tables on the sand.
  • Ayurvedic couples' treatments — see our Ayurveda guide.
  • Whale watching from Mirissa, December to April.
  • Sunset on the Galle Fort ramparts, then dinner inside the fort.
  • A turtle watch at night at Rekawa.
  • A cooking class together — see our cooking class guide.
  • A private boat trip on the Madu River or Koggala Lake.

Most romantic places to stay

  • Jungle lodges in the Cultural Triangle, with infinity pools facing Sigiriya or lakes.
  • Tea bungalows in the hill country.
  • Luxury tented camps near Yala and Wilpattu.
  • Beach villas in Tangalle, Hiriketiya and the coast around Ahangama.
  • Boutique hotels inside Galle Fort.

Read our where to stay guide for more on each area.

Tips for honeymooners

  • Tell your hotels it's your honeymoon — many add flowers, cake or an upgrade.
  • Don't over-plan. Two or three nights per place gives you time to enjoy the hotels.
  • Hire a private driver — it's more comfortable than public transport and gives you flexibility. See our driver guide.
  • Public displays of affection are frowned upon outside resorts; hand-holding is fine, kissing in public isn't.
  • Book the best rooms early — the top villas and bungalows fill months ahead for December–March.
