Kitulgala is a small rainforest village on the Kelani River, about 2.5–3 hours from Colombo on the road to Hatton and Nuwara Eliya. It's famous for two things: the river scenes of the 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai, which were filmed here, and white-water rafting, which makes it Sri Lanka's adventure capital.
The rafting
The standard trip runs around 5 km of the Kelani River with several named rapids, mostly grade 2 to 3. It's exciting but suitable for beginners with reasonable fitness — no experience is needed.
A typical trip includes:
- a safety briefing and practice on calm water,
- around 1.5–2 hours on the river, including stops to swim in calm stretches,
- a helmet, lifejacket, paddle and guide in each raft,
- transport back to the start.
Operators usually set a minimum age (often around 10–12) and require participants to be able to swim or at least be comfortable in water. Check with your operator.
Best time to go
Rafting is possible for most of the year, but water levels matter:
- After rain — higher water makes the rapids faster and more exciting.
- Dry spells — low water can make some rapids too shallow; trips may be shortened.
- During very heavy rain or floods — rafting stops for safety.
Water levels are also affected by the hydropower schemes on the river, so ask operators about current conditions. Mornings are often best.
Choosing an operator
There are many operators along the main road. Choose one that:
- has qualified, experienced guides with first-aid training,
- provides good-quality lifejackets and helmets that fit properly,
- runs a proper safety briefing,
- sends a safety kayaker or second raft with groups if possible,
- has good recent reviews.
Don't choose on price alone. Make sure your travel insurance covers rafting.
Other adventures in Kitulgala
- Canyoning — sliding down natural rock chutes and jumping into pools in the streams that feed the Kelani.
- Waterfall abseiling — rope descents beside waterfalls.
- Confidence jumping — jumping into deep river pools from rocks.
- Jungle trekking — guided walks in the forest across the river, reached by a small boat or rope crossing, with caves and waterfalls.
- Birdwatching — the Kitulgala forest is good for lowland endemic birds. See our birdwatching guide.
- Mountain biking and zip-lining with some operators.
Where to stay
Kitulgala has riverside hotels, eco-lodges and adventure camps with tents or cabins by the river. Many visitors simply stop for a few hours on the way between Colombo and the hill country — rafting makes a great break in a long drive to Hatton, Adam's Peak or Nuwara Eliya.
What to bring
- Swimwear and quick-dry clothes, plus a dry change of clothes.
- Shoes that stay on your feet (sandals with straps or old trainers).
- Sunscreen.
- A waterproof bag for your phone — or leave valuables in the car.
