Warm water, consistent waves and two surf seasons on opposite coasts — Sri Lanka is one of Asia's best surf destinations for every level. Here's where and when to go.

Sri Lanka has surf all year round — you just need to be on the right coast. The water is warm (around 27–29°C), boards are cheap to rent, and there are gentle beach breaks for beginners as well as world-class point breaks for experienced surfers.
Two seasons, two coasts
| Coast | Season | Main spots |
|---|---|---|
| South and south-west | November to April | Weligama, Midigama, Ahangama, Hiriketiya, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa |
| East | April/May to October | Arugam Bay and nearby points |
During each coast's off-season, the monsoon brings onshore winds and messy, dangerous waves, and many surf businesses close.
South coast (November–April)
- Weligama — a long, sandy bay with soft, slow waves. One of the best places in Asia to learn, with dozens of surf schools and board-rental stalls on the beach.
- Ahangama and Midigama — a string of reef and point breaks for intermediate and advanced surfers, such as Lazy Left, Lazy Right, Rams and Coconuts. Ahangama has become a stylish hub of surf camps, cafés and design hotels.
- Hiriketiya — a small horseshoe bay with a beach break for beginners and a reef break on the side. Lively and beautiful, but crowded in peak season.
- Hikkaduwa — the original surf town, with Main Reef, Benny's and North Jetty.
- Mirissa — a reef break at the western end of the bay; better known for whales than waves.
See our south coast itinerary.
East coast (April–October)
- Arugam Bay — Sri Lanka's surf capital and one of the best right-hand point breaks in Asia. Main Point is for experienced surfers; the area also has gentler breaks.
- Whiskey Point — north of Arugam Bay, mellow and good for beginners and improvers.
- Peanut Farm — two beach-and-point breaks south of town, with a lovely setting.
- Elephant Rock and Okanda — further south towards Kumana, quieter and more remote; you may see elephants on the way.
See our east coast itinerary.
Learning to surf
- Surf schools in Weligama, Hiriketiya, Ahangama and Arugam Bay offer group and private lessons, usually around 1.5–2 hours.
- Surf camps combine accommodation, daily lessons, video coaching and often yoga — a great way to progress quickly.
- Board rental is cheap and available on most surf beaches. Check boards for dings and fins before paying.
Surf etiquette and safety
- Respect the line-up. Don't drop in on other surfers — the surfer closest to the peak has priority.
- Know your level. Many reef breaks are shallow and sharp; stick to beach breaks until you're confident.
- Reef boots help on reef breaks with sea urchins.
- Use plenty of reef-safe sunscreen and wear a rash vest — the sun is intense.
- Watch for currents, especially outside the main season. See our beach safety guide.
- Check your travel insurance covers surfing.
