Sri Lanka has more than 1,300 km of coastline, and its beaches range from busy resort strips to empty bays where you'll share the sand with fishermen. The single most important thing to know: the south and west coasts are best from December to April; the east coast from May to September. Choose your beaches by season.
South coast (December–April)
- Unawatuna — a sheltered, swimmable bay near Galle with snorkelling and a lively café strip. Best for: swimming.
- Mirissa — a palm-fringed crescent and the base for whale watching. Best for: whales, sunsets.
- Weligama — a wide bay with gentle waves. Best for: learning to surf.
- Hiriketiya — a pretty horseshoe cove with waves for beginners and experienced surfers. Best for: surf and café culture.
- Tangalle — long, wild beaches with very few people; swim only in sheltered coves like Goyambokka. Best for: peace and quiet.
- Jungle Beach — a small forest-backed cove. Best for: snorkelling.
- Polhena — a reef-protected lagoon with turtles. Best for: families and beginner snorkellers.
West coast (December–April)
- Bentota — a broad resort beach with a river lagoon. Best for: families, water sports, resorts.
- Hikkaduwa — turtles, surf and nightlife. Best for: a social atmosphere.
- Negombo — convenient for the airport but not the best for swimming. Best for: first and last nights.
- Kalpitiya — wind-swept and remote. Best for: kitesurfing and dolphins.
East coast (May–September)
- Nilaveli and Uppuveli — long, calm beaches near Trincomalee. Best for: swimming and snorkelling trips to Pigeon Island.
- Pasikudah — a shallow, reef-protected bay where you can wade far out. Best for: young children.
- Kalkudah — Pasikudah's quieter, wilder neighbour. Best for: solitude.
- Arugam Bay — Sri Lanka's surf capital. Best for: surfing April–October.
- Marble Beach (Trincomalee) — a sheltered cove with very clear water. Best for: a calm swim.
Ocean safety
Sri Lanka's sea is powerful. Every year visitors drown in rip currents.
- Swim only in season for that coast, and in sheltered bays.
- Follow red flags and lifeguard instructions; ask locals where it's safe.
- Don't swim after drinking or alone at quiet beaches.
- If caught in a rip, don't fight it — swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the current.
Responsible beach travel
Don't touch or stand on coral, use reef-safe sunscreen, never feed turtles, and choose turtle hatcheries that release hatchlings promptly rather than keeping turtles in tanks for display.
